INESC-ID - IST Taguspark - Room 2N7.17, Av. Prof. Dr. Cavaco Silva, 2744-016 Porto Salvo, PortugalOn the 29th of April, Francisco Fernandes was an invited speaker at the "II Jornadas Científicas Universitárias e Politécnicas Egas Moniz – JEM" to talk about Virtual Reality in Physical Therapy. You can find more information here !
ARCADE published 7 new papers in 2021 across multiple disciplines: from Human-Computer Interaction and Computer Graphics to Biomechanics and Medicine. Check them out!
On January 31st, Hugo Nicolau was an invited speaker at the PhD Seminar in the School of Human Kinetics (University of Lisbon) to talk about interactive technologies and biofeedback in physical rehabilitation.
Members of the ARCADE team have been participating in the Grupo de Ajuda Mútua de Sobreviventes AVC (GAM) to engage in research activities with this community.
ARCADE has two new publications about interactive technologies and rehabilitation of stroke survivors. One of them at the premiere international venue of Human-Computer Interaction, the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems:
Inês Santos Silva, João Guerreiro, Marlene Rosa, Joana Campos, Augusto Gil Pascoal, Sofia Pinto, and Hugo Nicolau. 2020. Investigating the Opportunities for Technologies to Enhance QoL with Stroke Survivors and their Families. In Proceedings of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ’20). Association for Computing Machinery, New York, NY, USA, 1–11. DOI

Hugo Nicolau and Inês Santos Silva were interviewed by Camilo Lourenço and ARCADE was featured on his Facebook channel in a quick demonstration. Special thanks to André Domingues, Afonso Faria, and Stéphane Duarte for their hard work in developing the prototype.
The kick-off workshop was held on March 29th 2019 in IST – Taguspark. We counted with the participation of all project partners (Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento in Lisbon; Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica, and Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Egas Moniz) invited academic guests.
The workshop consisted of three stages. First, the PI presented an overview ARCADE and its goals followed by presentations of all project partners. In a second stage, participants were invited to experience previously interactive rehabilitation systems developed at INESC-ID. Finally, the workshop leveraged the participants multidisciplinary expertise – from computer science and interaction design to biomechanics and physiotherapy – and ended with two round table discussions about (1) specificity of stroke rehabilitation and the importance of compensatory movements, and (2) quantifying the rehabilitation process and implications for technology design.
